The Atapuerca Experimental Archaeology Centre (CAREX) has received the 'Trip Advisor 2019 Certificate of Excellence' for systematically achieving high ratings from visitors. To achieve this recognition, the opinion score must be higher than 4 stars out of a possible 5 and the centre, subsidiary of the Atapuerca System, has received a score of 4.5 out of 5 over the last year. Every year this travel website, one of the most prestigious in the world, awards the 'Certificate of Excellence' to tourism resources that show excellence on a continuous basis by consistently receiving reviews citing quality, quantity and novelty during the previous period.
The Atapuerca CAREX was renovated in 2015, becoming a centre for the dissemination of experimental archaeology. Thus, the old Archaeological Park and the Atapuerca Visitor Reception Centre were unified into a new centre with a permanent exhibition and educational workshops throughout the year. It has an outdoor and an indoor space. The first is organised as a chronological tour where you can learn about the evolution of technological innovations throughout history and the indoor section contains the first permanent exhibition on experimental archaeology held in Spain.
Thanks to this discipline we can get to know precisely how tools, huts, textiles, ceramics and works of art of the past were made and used. This exhibition follows a central theme based on its main experimental archaeology study disciplines such as stone carving, tool production over time, tool use, fire making, the evolution of the habitat throughout Prehistory, pottery, weaving and basketry, art and musical instruments.
Along the way, visitors can see and touch many of the replicas of archaeological materials made with the same techniques that were used in each period and even use some of the instruments and thus experience the techniques of the past.
Exhibitions
In addition to this permanent exhibition and the many workshops and activities that take place throughout the year, CAREX also has exhibitions such as the one that is showing currently: 'Yacimiento. Sinergias entre Arte y Ciencia' ('Site: synergies between Art and Science'), which unites the scientific disciplines specific to the study of our origins with those of contemporary art; twelve artists have been invited to explore, investigate and each produce a specific work based on their personal view of the Sierra de Atapuerca Sites. The fundamental purpose of this project has been to invite artists to contribute effectively in non-artistic places to establish dialogues with other discourses and enrich these dialogues. This exhibition can be visited free of charge during the centre’s opening hours.
